Involving the community in the Brigalow Belt South Bioregion
For the BBSB assessment, RACAC has established an open and inclusive process in which stakeholders participate throughout the assessment period and during the development of options. Non-government peak stakeholder groups represented on RACAC include farmers, conservationists, the timber industry, the mining industry, the union and the Aboriginal community. Regional stakeholders are also represented in the Brigalow Belt South Bioregion Assessment. A number of nominated representatives provide technical input into projects, while regional groups have also been invited to advise RACAC on critical natural resource issues in the region. This is being facilitated through a series of workshops, attended by representatives of over 40 groups and organisations, that are being held around the region during 2002. Through these workshops, representatives are identifying what they think are the most important issues that need to be addressed through the assessment. In many instances, they will also be making recommendations to RACAC on how those issues should be addressed. By involving the community in this way it means that in addition to the usual consultation mechanisms - in which the community has the chance to comment on government proposals - stakeholders actually participate in the development of those proposals. |
