Thursday, 12 November 1998

  • The NSW Government is committed to transforming the timber industry to focus on new, better skilled jobs and higher value products.
  • The NSW Government has already approved Industry Development Assistance funding from the Forest Industry Structural Adjustment Program of $6.2 million to 22 forest businesses in NSW.
  • These approvals are generating more than $22 million of new investment in the NSW timber industry and directly creating 137 new jobs.
  • Arising from the North East forests Agreement, the Government will provide an additional $10 million dollars to the Forest Industry Structural Adjustment Program and extend its operation for a further five years until 2006.
  • Examples of the impact of the Government’s Industry Development Assistance include:
    • Kempsey Timbers: a $4.5 million upgrade started in July 1998 which was supported by more than $1.2 million in Industry Development Assistance, The upgrade, which will support seven new staff, allows Kempsey Timbers to significantly improve its value-adding operations and productivity.
    • Hurford Hardwood: Hurford’s Hardwood, at Tuncester near Lismore, has received more than $1 million from Industry Development Assistance towards a $4.2 million project which will install state-of-the-art equipment to maximise the volume of value-added products such as joinery and furniture grade hardwood. The new business will run in parallel with Hurford’s Building Supplies and has seen 19 new jobs created.
    • J Notaras & Sons: More than $1 million of Industry Development Assistance is being provided to support a $4.2 million investment by J Notaras & Sons at Grafton which is expected to create 24 jobs.
    • WJ and JH Machin: WJ and JH Machin’s timber mill, based at Wingham near Taree, expects to employ an extra four workers as a result of a mill upgrade of up to $900,000. The mill is now able to produce mainly kiln dried and dressed products such as flooring, decking weatherboards, linerboards and furniture components. $241,500 of the upgrade was provided from Industry Development Assistance.
