The Hardwood Plantations Program

  • From next year 2000 hectares of plantation will be established every year for five years under the NSW Government’s Hardwood Plantation program.
  • This is equivalent to 1.7 million new trees planted per annum.
  • These plantations will be worth an estimated $8000 - $22,000 per hectare when mature.
  • It is estimated that for every 50 hectares of new plantation established there is one new job created in rural NSW.
  • Since coming to office the Government has established more than 13,000 hectares of new hardwood plantations.
  • This is equivalent to about 12.8 million trees or a 1.0 kilometre wide strip of trees running between Sydney and Newcastle.
  • It is a 45 per cent increase in the total area of State owned hardwood plantations.
  • This represents a Government investment of $53 million in hardwood plantations. Another $22 million is allocated to the program this financial year. It brings the total hardwood plantation investment by this Government to $75 million since 1995.
  • The Government has also introduced joint venture programs where landowners can work with State Forests of NSW to establish plantations on their property. A 40 hectare plantation would generate an annual payment to the landowner of $3200.
  • The Hardwood Plantation program currently generates direct employment for at least 650 people during the year.
  • The Government’s investment in hardwood plantations is helping the NSW hardwood timber industry to change its resource base from mature native forest to regrowth forests and plantations.
