The social and economic difficulties faced by small towns in rural NSW have many common causes. These include, amongst others, changing commodity prices and demand, transport and associated costs, improved agricultural technology and lower labour demands, educational opportunities and the rise of regional centres. Some towns have a level dependence on a particular local industry or enterprise. This mixture of causes is displayed and highlighted in towns having some dependence on the timber industry, an industry undergoing change and restructure.
