Structural adjustment assistance for the timber industry

The timber industry has been undergoing many changes — technological, economic and environmental — in recent decades which have affected businesses, workers and communities. The NSW Government has responded to the pressure of these changes with its undertaking to help create an efficient, technologically advanced and economically sustainable, sawlog-driven timber industry.

The Government acknowledges that such structural adjustment within the industry does not happen automatically, or without an impact on people’s livelihoods. It has therefore put in place a package of initiatives which is assisting workers and businesses affected by the industry’s structural adjustment.

The Forest Industry Structural Adjustment Package (FISAP) provides re-training for workers and redevelopment for businesses so that they can both participate in a value added, competitive and sustainable industry. FISAP is a $120 million package, jointly funded by the NSW and Commonwealth Governments.

The three key elements of FISAP are:

  • Workers Assistance, which includes new training for workers both currently and formerly employed in the timber industry; relocation costs; and income support.
  • Industry Assistance, for businesses needing help to upgrade and value-add.
  • Business Exit Assistance, for contractors and sawmillers who may wish to leave the industry because of the structural changes it has undergone.
