The community's role in forest assessmentsCommunity Consultation in BBSBThe participation of major stakeholders in the development of decisions about the forests' future is a cornerstone of the NSW Governments policy. The Government recognises that a successful and enduring outcome must be one that is accepted by all parties, and that acceptance can only be achieved through the genuine input and participation of all parties. To this end, RACAC has established an open, inclusive and transparent process in which stakeholders participate in policy development and implementation. Major stakeholders include government, conservationists, the timber industry, the mining industry, the union and the Aboriginal community. These and other stakeholders have been involved in the assessments of the east coast forests over the past five years. They are now involved in the assessments for the Western region of NSW. Through their representation on RACAC and through their technical input they participate in initial project planning, data analysis and the decision-making process. Stakeholders also contribute by providing feedback on regional issues throughout the assessment process. During the assessments on the east coast they participated through regional forest forums. For the Western assessments, the most effective means of participation is being developed in workshops with regional community members. For details click here. By involving the community in this way it means that in addition to the usual consultation mechanisms in which the community has the chance to comment on government proposals stakeholders actually participate in the development of those proposals. |
