Eastern Regions - Comprehensive Regional AssessmentsFrom 1995 - 2000 comprehensive regional assessments (CRAs) of the attributes and values of the eastern forests of New South Wales were undertaken. Fauna and flora habitats were mapped, environmental and cultural heritage identified, and the economic status and social make-up of local communities was surveyed. The assessments looked closely at the impact of changes to forest use and management on the environment, the townships, their economies and their people. These assessments were of four forest regions: Eden,Upper North East, Lower North East and Southern regions. The assessments were conducted by New South Wales and Commonwealth Government agencies (including the National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests of New South Wales, Department of Mineral Resources, Department of Land and Water Conservation, Environment Australia, Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and the Bureau of Resource Sciences) and consultants with a broad range of expertise carried out the work. The local community was also involved, through representation on regional forest forums, through participation in surveys and through volunteer work in the field. The comprehensive regional assessments included projects on a range of areas such as:
All the project reports from these assesments are available on the Commonwealth government RFA Website. The biophysical, cultural, economic and social information collected during the assessments was assessed and analysed by the participating stakeholders. The information which emerged from this analysis forms the basis of a series of NSW forest agreements and regional forest agreements with the Commonwealth Government. NSW forest agreements and regional forest agreements have been signed for Eden and the North East and the Southern Region. |
