Lower North East Regional Forest Forum Meets

31 May 1997

The first meeting of the Lower North East Regional Forest Forum is being held today at the Cundle Motor Inn, Taree.

The forum , made up of more than twenty members and chaired by Cr Leslie Brown, will be discussing its role in the joint Commonwealth/State comprehensive regional assessments (CRAs).

Forum members will also be briefed on the CRA process underway in New South Wales and the economic, social, environmental and heritage assessments to date.

The forums have been established to maintain effective liaison between regional communities and the Commonwealth and State Governments during the CRAs.

"They are a way of involving the community over and above the usual consultation mechanisms, which tend to occur at the end of the process rather than at the beginning," Cr Brown said.

"The forum ensures the community knows what is happening as it is happening, and that the community’s views are brought to the attention of Governments during and not after the completion of the assessments," he said.

Peak groups invited to nominate representatives for the forum include:

  • Local Government and Shires Association
  • Regional Development Group
  • Tourism NSW
  • Forest Products Association
  • National Association of Forest Industries
  • Australian Forest Growers
  • Nature Conservation Council
