Community Heritage Workshops

11 June 1997

Workshops are being held throughout the Eden area to find out what the locals think about their forest heritage.

The comprehensive regional assessments of New South Wales forests include an assessment of the environment and heritage value of forests and their social and economic values. The workshops are to make sure that the local community contributes their unique knowledge and experience of the area to the heritage assessments.

Sandy Blair from the Commonwealth’s Environment Australia is coordinating the workshops.

"Workshop participants (about 25 for each workshop) include representatives from community interest groups as well as individuals with a particular interest in or knowledge of the heritage values of the forests," Dr Blair said.

"We’re looking for forest places which may have special meaning to the local community. This could be for historical reasons - the remnants of an old saw mill, for example - or simply because it is a particular beauty spot or local landmark that you return to year after year."

"Its only through getting together with the community itself that we can really find out the meaningful and significant places in an area. And they are not necessarily the same places that visitors to the region would seek out."

The workshops are being held in the following towns:

11 June 1997 Bombala

17 June 1997 Wyndham

18 June 1997 Bemboka

19 June 1997 Cobargo

23 June 1997 Candelo

24 June 1997 Bega

25 June 1997 Eden
