Source: Resource and Conservation Assessment Council Eden Forest Forum Meets18 July 1997 The Eden Regional Forest Forum held its fourth meeting in Bombala last night, which attracted over 35 additional observers who turned up to hear major briefings from key NSW Government spokespeople and CRA Committee representatives. The Director of the NSW Forestry Structural Adjustment Committee, Ms Jane McAloon, briefed forum members on the Governments $120 million forestry package and answered questions from the floor. Tim Shepherd, an Executive Director with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, talked about wilderness assessments and David Brand from State Forests of NSW briefed the meeting on ecologically sustainable forest management (ESFM). Mr Brand is the NSW co-chair of the ESFM Committee for the comprehensive regional assessments. ESFM consultants also attended the meeting. The Eden Forums input is being sought in setting objectives for ecologically sustainable forest management. "This will ensure that the ESFM objectives and therefore future forest management have a regional perspective," Eden Forum Chairman, Kerry Pfeiffer, said. "There is no point in the Government developing objectives which cannot be put into practice in the region," he said. Also up for discussion at the meeting were water issues in the region and the question of an Eden Wharf facility. Rex Bowen, Director of the Resource and Conservation Assessment Council, said he was extremely pleased with the contribution being made by the forum members and other stakeholders into the comprehensive regional assessments (CRAs). RACAC is the NSW body coordinating the CRAs in Eden and other major regions of the State. The assessments will lead to a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) between the NSW and Commonwealth Governments which will determine future conservation and management of the south east forests. further info: Kerry Pfeiffer (064) 932 777 Gillian Higginson (02) 9228 3991 |
